SPEAKER: JOE
This is drones you're central source for all the hottest topics in the world of drones from UAV startups just taking off to aviation ideas that crash landed. We're covering the best...
SPEAKER: FENITY
and the worst the good and the bad. If it's happening in the world of drones we're talking about it here on Drones The Podcast.
SPEAKER: JOE
I’m Joe
SPEAKER: FENITY
And I’m Fenity and this is this week on drones. Well Joe we're going to break format because there is breaking news it's not every day is breaking news on a podcast and a podcast about drones but decision just handed down out of Washington D.C. This guy went up against the FAA. John Taylor said hey FAA I don't need to register my.
SPEAKER: JOE
He argued that because of the 2012 FAA modernization and Reform Act you know that you don't have to register a drone if you're a hobbyist.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Wow. And so he basically said look I'm a hobbyist I just do this drone thing for fun. Leave me alone. He strikes me as the kind of guy who's going to you know leave me alone let me do my thing. I don't need to pay you five dollars.
SPEAKER: JOE
He’s a “Leave me aloner.”
SPEAKER: FENITY
He won by the way. That's the update. But Joe and I are going to talk about it in depth so head over to upsonder.com and we'll have John Taylor versus the FAA right there.
SPEAKER: JOE
And today we're going be talking about good drone bad drone.
SPEAKER: FENITY
which are you?
SPEAKER: JOE
That's a difficult question.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Well that's a problem.
SPEAKER: JOE
I believe I'm a good drone, but I think there's a little bit of a bad drone in me.
SPEAKER: FENITY
It's like the Wizard of Oz, are you a good witch or bad witch. Isn’t that the quote? I don't know?!
SPEAKER: JOE
Can I say I’m moderately okay yeah?
SPEAKER: FENITY
Can I just be a drone, can I just be like an Up Sonder drone? That's all I want to be. Get it? Bee. I don't know, I don't know. Well OK so what's going on? Let's talk. Give me an example of a good drone Joe.
SPEAKER: JOE
Yes let's start off with a good drone.
SPEAKER: FENITY
I know a good drone when I see it. OK.
SPEAKER: JOE
Yes. So I have a question for you.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Oh no, I don't always answer questions right Joe.
SPEAKER: JOE
Do you like wildfire’s?
SPEAKER: FENITY
See I told you I can’t answer, I told you before, I said before and I’ll say again, I do like disasters natural or otherwise. But yeah wildfire is probably a bad idea. One of my least favorite of all disasters. Why?
SPEAKER: JOE
Because it burns things.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Oh Geez! Yeah that’s going to be a problem, especially in populated areas. OK so what are drones doing about it?
SPEAKER: JOE
So this Spanish company drone hopper has actually made a fire fighting drone. So this little this little drone is not that little. It's actually about 5 feet in diameter. It can carry about 80 gallons of water right to a location where they need to drop.
SPEAKER: FENITY
That's a lot of water that's no DC 10 but that's a lot of water.
SPEAKER: JOE
Yeah it’s not a DC 10.
SPEAKER: FENITY
My question what happened to those firefighter calendar’s, you know those fundraiser things. Then what?
SPEAKER: JOE
I guess you have to add a drone.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Drone calendar.
SPEAKER: JOE
Yeah maybe they put a little dress it.
SPEAKER: FENITY
I know, I know people who buy a drone calendar.
SPEAKER: JOE
Maybe a helmet.
SPEAKER: FENITY
OK. There are bad uses too right?
SPEAKER: JOE
Yes there are a lot of bad uses of drones.
SPEAKER: FENITY
How do you know?
SPEAKER: JOE
Well no comment. So we're going to go talk about what happened at the NFL draft a little while ago.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Oh, this was not good.
SPEAKER: JOE
No it's not.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Now you looked up how to say this guy's last name because I didn't know I can say Jonathan, but what’s his last name?
SPEAKER: JOE
His name is Colet.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Okay, what did he do? This guy is. He says he's shooting a film out in Philly filming in Philly.
SPEAKER: JOE
Yeah, there's the NFL draft going on at the Philadelphia Art Museum and he's flying over the schoolgul River which is near there and the police see him and they come up and they say, “what are you doing?” And he says, “I’m flying my drone,” and they actually detain him. Yeah they detain him for like 12 hours and then they threaten him with reckless endangerment.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Oh Penalty. Penalty. Yeah that’s what they would say. Now wait a minute. And what was he doing, just flying his drone. So again check your “B4Ufly,” check your apps, go to upsonder.com. That's where we do, That’s where we go. Yeah that’s… triple check. And remember your local law enforcement authorities are never the final word but still be careful. OK.
SPEAKER: JOE
So we have one more good drone story.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Locked down!
SPEAKER: JOE
locked down? No that’s not a good drone story! But let’s do it anyway.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Well your definition of good and my definition of good about it’s just…
SPEAKER: JOE
Prisons.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Aw, bad jokes, bad jokes. Okay go ahead.
SPEAKER: JOE
It's about prisons and it's about smuggling things into prisons using drones.
SPEAKER: FENITY
And what seems to be the problem?
SPEAKER: JOE
What seems to be a problem is you can't smuggle things into prisons using drones.
SPEAKER: FENITY
visiting hours?
SPEAKER: JOE
Yes I believe so.
SPEAKER: FENITY
But you can’t bring in…
SPEAKER: JOE
You can't bring in drugs, knives and cell phones.
SPEAKER: FENITY
But now there is a company that is this has become a problem. Drones are bringing stuff into prisons.
SPEAKER: JOE
Yes.
SPEAKER: FENITY
We don't know how widespread this is but it's happening so much so that this company is building a 2000 foot digital shield around a prison.
SPEAKER: JOE
That's right. A company in the U.K. is working with the prison there to basically build a digital fence all around the prison so that people cannot smuggle stuff into the prison using drones.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Get your shovels, get your shovels. Back to the old days.
SPEAKER: JOE
Dig those tunnels. Get some money to pay off this gaurds.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Exactly, go back to the old days of doing it.
SPEAKER: JOE
So there is this interesting thing I think you found this one Fenity about drone racers.
SPEAKER: FENITY
Oh yeah. Drone races in Southern California. Well these boys you know they were just good ole boys having a good time. That's what they thought. But here's what happened. They capture this guy on camera illegally dumping trash at the at the end of this like you know where they build new houses with local housing development and so basically this this drone pilot he says Oh my goodness look this guy is dumping trash is clearly illegal I mean hello a mattress. It wasn't just like a banana peel it was like a mattress and stuff. So he gets the footage and he sends it to his local authorities. So this is an example of drones for good. We talk about at upsonder.com all the time, drones for good but this is a perfect example. He submitted it to local authorities. They got the footage. The camera zoomed in on the license plate. Guess what?
SPEAKER: JOE
They saw the license plate. They tracked him.
SPEAKER: FENITY
from the department the obvious, Thank you Joe. Anyway if you're still listening we do highly recommend you know were produced and sponsored by upsonder.com. So if it weren’t for Up Sonder we wouldn’t be here, so go there.
